jamdani is a special weave that takes great time and skill to create. the entire process happens without aid of technology or machines. each "buti," as the white motif is called, is woven by hand, one line at a time as the fabric itself is woven on a hand loom. this heritage craft is native to the indian state of west bengal where our artisans are located. this fabric is woven in small villages, in the homes of weavers.
along with slubs, slight variances in the density of the weave is normal-- and usually appears as a faint stripe-- and is due to the humidity in the air in the morning vs. afternoon, and the strength of the weaver throughout the day. (read: you aren't the only one with the most energy after your morning coffee.) we love these tiny stripes as they remind us of the human care and touch that went into its creation.
